Cape Verde
The Cape Verde islands lie on the edge of the Tropics, just off the bulge of West Africa. The people are of mixed descent, their male ancestors having been Portuguese fishermen and peasant farmers whilst the women were slaves from nearby Guinea.
The islands were discovered by Portugal and it was not until 1975 that they won their independence. When I first visited them, in the 1990s, they were extremely poor and the people still lived much as they had done for the past 500 years. They have now been "discovered" by the time-share brigade and are galloping forward into the 21st century
