Chalkpit Lane is part of the ancient high road to London. It leads from the village of Lavant up onto the Downs beside the Trundle hillfort. From here the way leads down the other side of the Downs to the village of Singleton.
The white house at the top of the old track was built from the ruins of an older one. It is called the Rubbing House. It was here that the horses which had toiled and sweated to drag coaches and carts up the hillside were rubbed down and given a rest.
