Canon Lane Buy

Canon Lane is in the episcopal (Church-owned) quarter of Chichester. The stone arches at either end originally served to prevent public access. On the far side of the cathedral a row of houses fronted the cathedral green, and at either end of this terrace there were more gates. Thus, in mediaeval times the entire church precinct could be closed off to the general populace.
The gates were all removed many centuries ago allowing people to come and go at will.
