Painted in illustration of the poem by war-time pilot, John Gillespie Magee :

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, ...
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air..."

After I had just finished this painting a visitor wandered in, saw the picture, and, before I had even had the chance to explain it, started to recite the poem. Result: one very chuffed artist!
