Machinery at the Salt-pans
This series of massive iron gears was used, until fairly recently, to lift water from the sea into a salt-pan.
In the background is the mill which once performed the same task with a lot less fuss and noise and at no expense. The long pole on the back of the mill was used to turn the cap, and the sweeps, according to the direction of the wind. When water was not needed, the sweeps would be "feathered" so that they did not turn.
