Steps in Altea
Altea is a rather picturesque town on the east coast of Spain. (It lies just a few miles north of Benidorm, the mega tourist resort.)
The town is now focused on the seaside, and has a sizeable fishing port, a big marina, and a promenade lined with restaurants, but the "casco antiguo" or old quarter is on the hill behind these modern developments. The hill is so steep that only one road winds its way to the top, but its convolutions are linked by a network of stone steps, such as the ones in this painting.
