Up Marden Church
Up Marden church stands surrounded by trees in a quiet village in a remote corner of the South Downs. This place is believed to have been the principal seat of the Godwine family before the famous earl moved his residence to Bosham. It is likely, therefore, that a place of worship had been built here, on this site, at an early age.
The present church is so quiet and so simple that it positively exudes peace; it seems to have been left behind in a previous century. No doubt this feeling is in part communicated by the tranquil, almost secret setting, but the fact that the church is still without electricity and has a rustic brick floor and white-washed walls also adds to the ambience.
The drawing was commissioned by a man whose favourite place is Up Marden church.
