Morella
Morella is a fabulous mediaeval citadel in the region of Valencia (Spain). The hilltop site is, of course, relatively easy to defend and it is probably for this reason that the place has been occupied since prehistoric times. Some authorities even claim that it is the oldest continually occupied town in Spain (although most would award that title to Cadiz). During the Reconquista Morella was of considerable strategic importance, the area around having been chosen by a band of knight-crusaders as their seat of power.
Morella is superficially like most small Spanish towns; it consists of a jumble of narrow streets and alleys which wind their way up the hill. But unlike most of the others it is also a wealthy, genteel place, with a super abundance of fine stone buildings and no trace of any decrepit slums.
