Egyptian Grasshopper
This is the grasshopper, or locust, which causes so much trouble in Africa. Clouds of these little vegetarians arriving in town can quickly devastate the local scenery and cause famine for other animals - including man.
Fortunately such occurrences are quite rare, because grasshoppers are usually solitary beings, and because there are not usually enough of them to make trouble.
Unlike most other insects, grasshoppers do not go through a "maggoty" stage; they hatch from the egg as six-legged creatures. They then go through a series of moults, shedding their skin as they grow and eventually sprouting wings. Follow this link to see the same grasshopper wearing his previous skin.
