11. Christians with Muskets
On day three of the Alcoy's Moros y Cristianos festival the two sides indulge in a ritual parade which is meant to symbolise the battle between them and the eventual Christian reconquest of the town. This is a fairly tedious business which consists of the men parading around the streets firing off their muskets at regular intervals.
These are real guns, and they make a REAL noise. The participants wear ear-plugs and yet still walk around with a dazed expression on their faces. They don't appear to gain much pleasure from the experience; perhaps its just one of those things that a man has to do.
Note that many of the innocent bystanders have their hands over their ears. This doesn't help much. Clearly these people are tourists; all of the Alcoy folk have fled into their houses.
