Benidorm (1)
Benidorm is a monstrous holiday resort on the Costa Blanca (Spain). Fifty years ago there was nothing here except a tiny fishing village. Now the place is a jungle of concrete tower blocks, fast-food restaurants, night-clubs, bars, and shops selling tacky souvenirs made in Taiwan.
This photo of the beach was taken on a Monday morning in August. On Saturdays there is hardly room to sit, still less to lie down, or so I am told. Fighting your way to the water's edge is so hard that the local government is said to be planning a new law whereby no one may sit within six feet of the water.
