The streets in the old town of La Vila Joiosa are so narrow, and buildings so tall that even the sunshine of a midsummer's day can hardly find its way to the ground.
In this photo, the light creates a dazzling contrast between the colourful buildings on the north side of the street and the ones on the south. Those on the south are doomed to stand, forever, in the blackest of shadows. Whereas most Northern Europeans would consider the south-facing apartments to be infinitely more desirable, the locals value the cool shade.
