Casco Antiguo (2)
Spanish tenement blocks seem to cling together for protection. This is the way the houses have always been built, ever since prehistoric times; they tell of a series of invasions and wars which continued from the age of the Phoenicians right down to Franco's era.
Villajoyosa is no exception to the rule; the old houses are tightly packed within the confines created by a stout stone wall and a river valley. No doubt living like this promotes neighbourliness; no doubt it encourages a tolerant attitude towards one's fellows. But it does make it difficult to dry the washing.
