Guadalest
Guadalest lies some miles inland from Altea, in Valencia (Spain). Its proximity to the mega seaside resort of Benidorm has ensured its transition from a stunningly picturesque village to a tourist mecca filled with souvenir shops.
This having been said, Guadalest is still worth a quick visit. That house, on the left of the photograph, really is perched atop an isolated pinnacle of rock, and the tiny citadel which overlooks the little village is almost as difficult of access; it can only be reached via a drawbridge.
The ethnology museum inside the citadel is well worth a visit - it has a working model of a horizontal watermill, a full-sized olive press, and 1950s film footage of peasant farming in Spain. The castle itself is also open to the public.
