Uncle Dick's
This wonderful house, with its beatnik thatch, was probably built in the late 14th or early 15th century. It is almost certainly the oldest surviving house on Hayling Island; even the church, nearby, is only a couple of hundred years more senior.
Throughout the first half of the 20th century the place was known as Rose Cottage, but this name is hardly more genuine than the new one. Indeed, throughout most of its life it has probably been called by the name of the man who lived there, so that Uncle Dick's is more appropriate (assuming that he really did live there...).
