Cynomorium coccineum
Here is a really weird plant. It looks like a type of fungus, but that tall red thing is actually a spike of very tiny, very densely packed flowers. The stalk of the Cynomorium is so short that it is barely noticeable - it can't be seen in this photo - and there are no leaves. Clearly, a plant such as this one cannot operate by photosynthesising; it has no chlorophyll. Instead, it feeds on the sap of the surrounding plants.
Cynomorium coccineum grows on salt-laden, sandy and rocky ground. This specimen was photographed in Southern Spain in the month of February.
