Fontanas
The picturesque village of Fontanas is set at the back of a deep reccess notched into the north face of Ilha Santo Antao. If you want to live here you have to be fit. The only source of water is down at the bottom of this little cleft, at the end of the flight of stone steps. The people spend a great deal of time trudging up and down the steps, carrying water to their homes and to their crops of maize which grow on the narrow terraces.
