Chimney at Calatanazor
The chimneys in the village of Calatanazor are all of this type. Until recent years the region was habitually snowed-up in the winter, and this design kept the snow from falling down into the fire.
On the occasion of our visit, in July 2007, the temperature was over 100F (38C) and it was hard to picture the place enduring even a frost.
"Come back in six months time!" an elderly villager told us. But he also said that, nowadays, the village seldom sees much snow.
