Aljibes Buy

Aljibe (Al-hee-bé) is the word given by the Spanish to a water cistern. It is clearly of Arabic origin - as are the cisterns in this photograph.

The little doorways lead into two hot and humid chambers, each housing a separate stone-built cistern. The aljibes stand in the oldest part of the citadel of Melilla. They originally served the occupants of a casbah (Arab citadel) built here by the local Berber ruler; they are pretty much the only thing to have survived from pre-Christian times.
