Inside a Snow Well
The well, or pit, is about forty feet deep. When it was full of hard-packed snow the doorways led straight onto the frozen surface - or onto the esparto grass which was spread on top to protect and insulate the "harvest".
When the well is empty the doorways lead to a sheer drop; hence the railing, which has been put in place by a safety-minded local authority.
