The mediaeval citadel of Melilla (Spanish Morocco).

This robust castle and its straggling offshoots represents 500 years of constant struggle between a people who wanted to remain Muslim (and independent) and one who, having finally thrown off the yoke of religious and national oppression, seem to have been unable to recognise their national boundaries.
Having driven the Muslims out of Iberia, and having got a taste for further conquest in the New World, the Spanish ruling classes wanted to "liberate" every corner from heathenism or any other alien creed.
Melilla and Ceuta are the last toeholds.
