Refraction
Light travels more slowly through water than through air, and the slowing of the different parts of a beam of light as it enters the water at an angle cause it to bend - or refract.
The refraction of light causes objects which are half in and half out of the water to appear bent.
In the case of this sunken boat, the refraction and distortion are radical.
