Ornamental detail of the Mezquita
The level of ornamentation on the ancient Moorish mosque in Cordoba is surely unmatched anywhere, except in the Moorish citadel at Granada. Islam forbids the representation of people or animals, and so the artists have devoted themselves to making geometric patterns, abstract renderings of plants, and inscriptions produced in a highly stylised version of the Arab script.
