Kids in Sao Tome
These children are the descendants of Cape Verdean workers who came to Sao Tome from their own, drought-stricken islands and who worked on the cocoa plantations. Conditions here were terrible; in the 1950s the people were still being driven with whips.
Now the old plantations have been abandoned and the people live as they please. There is plenty of food, but absolutely no money. And there is plenty of malaria; thus, the life expectancy for these kids is short.
