Snails Aestivating (1)
In some climates snails are obliged to hibernate for the winter; in more temperate places they remain active throughout the winter but spend the summer "aestivating" to escape the drought.
The snails in this photograph are aestivating on grass stalks. Perhaps, by clumping together on the grass, they hope to be mistaken, by their predators, for seed heads. Or perhaps it is simply that snails lying asleep on the ground be easy prey, whereas a bird would have difficulty taking these.
